Re-make of the 1951 apartheid-era South African drama about two fathers from different ends of the social spectrum coming to terms with personal loss. Rev. Stephen Kumalo (James Earl Jones) is a minister from a poor rural community who travels to Johannesburg to find his son Absolom (Eric Miyeni), who has disappeared.

Robbed and beaten on his arrival, Kumalo's worst fears are realised when he discovers that Absolom has become a petty thief with a pregnant girlfriend in tow, while his sister Gertrude (Dambisa Kente) is now a prostitute. In a parallel story, wealthy landowner James Jarvis (Richard Harris) also arrives in Johannesburg, this time to bury his son, a prominent civil-rights campaigner, murdered during a robbery.
